  • Hepatology is the branch of medicine that deals with the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas.
  • The term comes from the Greek word hepar meaning liver.
  • It focuses on diseases that affect the liver’s ability to detoxify, store energy, and produce vital proteins and enzymes.

When to Consult a Hepatologist

You may be referred to a hepatologist if you experience:

  • Persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, or abdominal discomfort
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Dark urine or pale stools
  • History of alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, or metabolic disorders
